Superior Sharks hold off enthusiastic Lions in Currie Cup try-fest

The Sharks made it three consecutive Currie Cup victories with a 43-31 bonus-point success over the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Both team's scored five tries but it was the kicking boots of flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain and Sanele Nohamba that made all the difference.

Chamberlain succeeded with three conversions and two penalties while replacement back Nohamba slotted two three-pointers in the second half to punish an ill-disciplined Lions outfit.

The hosts took an early lead with try through wing Boldwin Hansen that was converted by flyhalf Vaughen Isaacs.

It was one-way traffic from there though as the Sharks took control with tries from left wing Marnus Potgieter and scrumhalf Cameron Wright.

Chamberlain's success from the kicking tee saw the Sharks take 20-7 lead at the halftime break.

The visitors extended that advantage with a try by Thembelani Bholi soon after the restart.

Emmanuel Tshituka pulled a try back for the Lions but Celimpilo Gumede restored the Sharks' lead on the scoreboard with Chamberlain adding the conversion.

Nohamba came onto the field and slotted two penalties while a try by replacement forward Dan Jooste sealed the points for the Sharks.

The Lions showed some late fight with two tries, through Morne Brandon and James Mollentze, but it was too little to late as the hosts only claimed a losing bonus-point for scoring four tries from the contest.
