Supercomputer predicts Champions League winners with four English teams in contention

After Chelsea beat Manchester City in last season's Champions League final, a supercomputer has given both teams a greater than 20% chance of reaching this season's showpiece.

While the venue of the final remains up in the air, with UEFA expected to strip Saint Petersburg of the final after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the prospect of another all-English final remains a possibility.

Chelsea, City and Liverpool all have a lead to take into the second leg of their respective last-16 games, while Manchester United's 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid keeps them very much in the mix.

Pep Guardiola's team have the best chance of going all the way, after their near-miss last term, but the stats suggest none of the English sides can be ruled out.

Manchester City have a greater than 99% chance of reaching the quarter-finals, according to FiveThirtyEight 's model, thanks to their 5-0 victory away to Sporting CP in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Guardiola's men also have the best chance of reaching the semis (69%) and the final (45%), while their 26% chance of winning the entire thing is higher than any other team.

Premier League title rivals and 2019 Champions League winners are the next most likely champions, with a 21% chance, with 2020 winners Bayern Munich next in line with 18% despite only managing a draw away to Red Bull Salzburg.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the relatively low placement of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, with the two heavyweights 3% and 4% respectively to win the trophy after Kylian Mbappe scored the only goal of the game when the teams met at the Parc des Princes.
