Super Eagles’ new coach for unveiling soon, says Enoh

All things being equal, the Super Eagles will have a new coach before the beginning of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Nigeria will face Benin Republic, Libya, and Rwanda in Group D of the qualifiers for the 2025 AFCON slated for Morocco.

The tournament will be played from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, following the decision of CAF to adjust the schedule of the tournament for the congested FIFA calendar.

It will be the first time in Nations Cup history that the tournament will kick off in December and run over the Christmas and New Year periods. Speaking when he appeared on a Channels Television magazine programme, Politics Tonight, the Minister of Sports, John Owan Enoh, said that the decision on who becomes the new coach has almost been concluded, saying the name of the successful candidate will be announced soon. He said: “The appointment will be sooner rather than later.”

The Guardian learnt that the NFF technical committee met at the Federation’s head office, yesterday, apparently to take a final decision on the coach for the national team.

Although details of the meeting were not disclosed, it was said to have dwelt on coaches for the Super Eagles and the national U-20 team, Flying Eagles.

The Super Eagles have been without a coach since Finidi George resigned from the position following Nigeria’s defeat by Benin Republic in a World Cup qualifier, and the NFF’s subsequent decision to employ a foreign technical adviser for the team.
