Sundowns left furious at referee as late stunner earns Baroka a point

Mamelodi Sundowns' coaching staff were left furious as a late goal from Richard Mbulu earned Baroka FC a point against the PSL log leaders at Peter Mokaba Stadium Monday night.

With a 1-0 lead in the bank courtesy of a Lyle Lakay free-kick, Sundowns looked to be cruising to another win.

However, in the 95th minute, there was confusion as Sundowns thought they had been awarded a free-kick only for Baroka to take to the initiative and launch the ball forward before a stunning volley from Richard Mbulu saw Baroka secure a valuable point in their battle against relegation.

Sundowns could have gone 20 points clear at the top of the table, but were left to rue their missed chances instead.

It was no surprise when Sundowns dominated early proceedings, earning their first chance via a free-kick, which saw a well-taken effort by Lakay crash against the post 20 minutes in.

Just seconds later, a quick attack from hosts Baroka found the Sundowns' defence wanting and as Ntiyiso Mbombi was weaving his magic in the box, his cut-back was handled by Rushine de Reuck, leaving the referee with little choice but to point to the penalty spot.

Fortunately for Masandawana, Basil Mphahlele's effort sailed high over the crossbar.

Later in the opening half, Lakay would find the woodwork once again with a powerful strike on the edge of the area.

Sundowns' pressure finally paid off in the second stanza and that man Lakay, who had been close with his first two strikes, would not be denied a third time as his free-kick curled beautifully into the top corner for the opening goal.
