Sunderland scoring 3 own goals in 7 minutes is one of the Prem's craziest ever moments

Meikayla Moore has made back pages around the world for scoring three own goals during New Zealand’s defeat to the United States on Sunday.

In truly remarkable scenes at the SheBelieves Cup, the Kiwi defender completed a ‘perfect hat-trick’ of own goals by rippling her own net with left-footed, right-footed and headed deflections.

All that, and it took place within the space of just 31 chaotic first-half minutes with the USA eventually running away 5-0 victors once Ashley Hatch and Mallory Pugh got in on the goalscoring act.

There’s no denying that it must have been a really tough experience of Moore, who plays her club football for Liverpool, but there is solace to be found in the fact that these freak instances can occur.

Own goals are ultimately a case of bad luck where the player is often caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Sunderland fans will know that better than most on the back of their 2002/03 season.

While, no, there hasn’t been another high-profile case of one player bundling home three own goals that we know of, Sunderland produced the next best thing during a Premier League clash with Charlton Athletic.

The 2002/03 campaign is not one that the Black Cats look back on with much fondness because it just happens to be one of the worst performances in Premier League history as they racked up just 19 points.

In fact, Sunderland rather astonishingly didn’t pick up a single point after their 0-0 draw with Blackburn Rovers on January 11 with a sickening 15 consecutive defeats following. Seriously.

As such, there was something painfully fitting about the fact that their 3-1 defeat to Charlton at the Stadium of Light in February of that dreaded season saw all four goals converted by Sunderland players.
