Successful surgery for Schrotter after Moto2 test crash

Liqui Moly Intact GP’s Marcel Schrötter has completed successful surgery on his left hand following a crash in Moto2 testing.

Schrotter’s final three days of winter testing came to an abrupt end on Monday as the German succumbed to the rollercoaster track in the opening morning session. The 29-year-old suffered a fracture to the small outer metacarpal bone of his left hand in the crash on the fast last corner of the Algarve International Circuit and was quickly transferred to Barcelona.

As expected, Dr. Mir’s surgical team at the Dexeus University Hospital undertook a procedure on Tuesday afternoon to fix the fracture with two screws, with Schrotter sent home the following morning to begin rehabilitation.

A successful test prior to injury saw the German ninth overall in the combined standings at the close of the official test, just under a second adrift of the record-breaking fastest time set by KTM’s Pedro Acosta, with all eyes firmly set on Qatar’s opening race next week.

“After the procedure, Dr. Mir came to see me and was very happy with the surgery,” Schrotter confirmed.

“Originally they had planned to use a plate for fixation because the fracture consisted of smaller parts but in the end everything could be done with two screws, which is positive. Now I really hope that I can compete in Qatar. That’s my firm goal!

“Overall, it was a positive test and that gives us all a great feeling,” he continued. “We have confirmed the good impressions from the first test in Jerez. We’ve made a really good start to the new year after the long winter break and that was also the case in Portugal.
