Sub tragedy, West Bank violence, Modi's US state visit and Macron's climate summit
You have to turn the clock back two decades to the second Intifada for the last time Israel used a helicopter gunship against West Bank militants. That's what happened on Monday in the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin. The next day, Jewish settlers were targeted in a gas station shooting spree. Israel's most far-right government ever includes settlers who don't hold back.
A toast among teetotallers: Joe Biden feted India's prime minister at a White House banquet, part of Narendra Modi's first state visit to Washington. Downplayed were lectures on democratic backsliding in India, celebrated were trade and defence ties as well as the rise of an Indian diaspora that's more than 4 million strong, with for instance, the late mother of US Vice President Kamala Harris born in India.
It was very a different tone from France's president: Emmanuel Macron hosted China's prime minister and praised Li Qiang for attending a major climate finance summit here in Paris where for instance, Macron hailed a debt restructuring deal for Zambia and talked up sustainable lending that avoids future debt traps. The French leader talked up green initiatives but also championed big industry.
