Student's 21st birthday ruined after flatmates chase would-be burglar out of 'second storey window'

A student has had her 21st birthday ruined by a burglar — with her brave flatmates chasing the intruder out through a second-floor window.

Megan Bennett, who lives in Withington, was out celebrating her big milestone last weekend when her flatmates called to say that a balaclava-clad man had attempted to raid their flat.

Megan, from Denton, says she and her flatmates have been suffering from anxiety since the intrusion.

“He came through in a balaclava,” Megan, who studies sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University, told the Manchester Evening News .

“We were disoriented and [then he] saw my flatmate. My second flatmate full-on ran after him.

“He jumped out a second storey window. The police were baffled.”

What makes Megan’s experience out of the ordinary is that she was visited by two men claiming to be noise officers the day before — leading her to believe she was ‘targeted’.

Megan added: “It sounds like their behaviour, but it also seemed like a weird coincidence to have a party on the Friday.

“I feel like we must have been targeted for a reason, especially since there are nine flats in the block.”

Fortunately, the wrong-doer was unable to get away with any of the students’ property — but the experience has left the trio shaken nevertheless — and ‘ruined’ Megan’s special day.

“It was my 21st birthday, I was out at a party,” she continued.

“It did ruin my night a bit. You get a call on your birthday… you do not want to think about
