Storm Agnes to bring wind speeds of up to 41mph in Greater Manchester

Current Met Office predictions state that parts of Greater Manchester could see wind speeds as high as 41mph this evening as Storm Agnes sweeps across the country.

Wind speeds are expected to pick up significantly from midday, going from a maximum of 17mph at 10am to 23mph in Manchester alone. Meanwhile, areas such as Wigan and Warrington will see higher wind speeds at the same time, at 26mph and 29mph respectively.

Wind speeds will continue to pick up throughout the day, peaking at 9pm where Wigan and Rochdale could see up to 41mph of wind while other areas such as Manchester could see speeds as high as 39mph. It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for wind for most parts of the UK, including Greater Manchester.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “We are likely to potentially see some damaging winds, the possibility of some brief power interruptions, particularly in Irish Sea coastal areas. So Northern Ireland, north-west England, west Wales, and south-west Scotland, that’s where we’ll probably see gusts of up to 75mph (Wednesday) afternoon, (Wednesday) evening, that’s when the peak of the winds will be and then Storm Agnes will move across Scotland clearing away from Shetland through Thursday morning.”

Come midnight, wind speeds are expected to drop significantly, with Greater Manchester seeing speeds ranging between 16mph and 18mph. This trend will continue on Thursday morning, with most areas in the region seeing speeds of 9mph to 11mph by 9am.
