Stoke City managerial update shared as Championship duo emerge as targets
Stoke City will consider Wayne Rooney and Tony Mowbray as potential options to replace Michael O’Neill if the current boss leaves in the summer.
Despite a 2-0 victory over Millwall yesterday, the Potters are languishing in the bottom half of the Championship table, when they had been hoping to push for promotion.
Therefore, the former Northern Ireland chief is under huge pressure and it has been reported that the hierarchy are already lining up potential replacements.
Daniel Farke is seen as a leading contender, whilst The Sun have claimed that Derby’s Rooney and Blackburn’s Mowbray are also on Stoke’s radar.
Even though Rooney’s side are in the relegation zone, the Manchester United legend has enhanced his reputation for how he has handled himself at a club in crisis, with the team still just about in the fight to survive despite suffering a 21-point deduction.
Meanwhile, Mowbray has done a fine job at Ewood Park, with Rovers in the mix for promotion as they battle for a top six finish, which as an impressive achievement given the lack of financial backing he has had.
The verdict
It’s no surprise that Stoke are considering Rooney and Mowbray because they have both done very good jobs in the Championship this season, in difficult circumstances.
The reality is that Stoke have endured a very underwhelming season, so the Potters hierarchy are right to weigh up potential replacements for O’Neill because a big decision may need to be made.
So, it could be a big summer ahead for the club and it will be interesting to see which direction Stoke go in.
