Stockport County promoted to League One after win over Morecambe

Stockport County have been promoted for the second time in three seasons. A 2-0 against Morecambe was enough to secure their return to League 1 for the first time in 14 years.

County needed just a point to be sure of going up. And Isaac Olaofe's 8th-minute goal set them on their way before Fraser Horsfall added a second just before half-time.

The victory means that with three games to spare The Hatters, who last played in the third tier in 2010, can not be caught and will be one of the three teams automatically promoted.

They can clinch the League 2 title and ensure they go up as champions with a win on Tuesday when they travel to Notts County.

It is the latest chapter in the remarkable rise of County, who were playing regional football in National League North, the sixth tier, as recently as 2018.

The Hatters, whose upturn in fortunes has coincided with their takeover by local businessman Mark Stott in 2020, returned to the Football League in 2022. And they narrowly missed out on back-to-back promotions after going down on penalties to Carlisle United after a 1-1 draw in the play-off final last May.

However, they have now put that Wembley heartache firmly behind them with a stunning campaign spearheaded by boss Dave Challinor.

There were jubilant scenes at the final whistle. And council chiefs have already planned for street parties around the ground that are expected to go on long into the night.
