Stockport County launch probe into 'racist and sectarian chanting' at Edgeley Park

Stockport County have launched an investigation after reports of racist chanting at their match against Harrogate Town. The Hatters drew 0-0 with the Yorkshire side in their League 2 clash at Edgeley Park on Saturday, their latest home following their return to the football league this season.

However, it was marred by reports of 'racist and sectarian' songs being sung from the stands. A number of complaints were made about the 'disgraceful' chanting on social media.

One fan said on Twitter: "Something needs doing. If proper fans are getting sick of stuff and considering moving their seats then there’s a serious problem.

"I’m all for growing the fan base and it’s nice to see so many youngsters coming to the games but we want the right sort of fans not the idiots."

Another added: "After setting the bar for great atmosphere in the National League last season we don’t need this moronic crap. Left a bad taste for my daughter’s first County game."

Whilst another said: "If you have to be racist to have fun at a football match just go and be racist on your own in your house you miserable fucks. Stockport County doesn’t need or want you as fans."

Local councillor Matt Wynne said on Twitter: "Sectarian and racist chanting is not welcome in Edgeley. I hope there is an investigation by the Club and it's stamped out."

And the club have confirmed they are now looking into the reports and have promised they will ban any supporters found to be involved from Edgeley Park.

"The Club has received a number of reports of racist and sectarian chanting from sections of the ground during our fixture yesterday with Harrogate Town" County said in a statement.
