Stockport council will help Tameside tackle failing children's services

Stockport council will help Tameside tackle its failing children's services.

The Tameside department was rated ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted last year before a independent report led to the resignations of the council leader and the chief executive.

Stockport - where children’s services are rated 'good' in 2022 - will work with bosses at the neighbouring town hall from January 2025. Some 400 days of support per year for three years will be offered.

Tameside appointed Jill Colbert OBE to the role of director of children’s services this week. She is expected to start her new £166,000-a-year job early in 2025.

Tameside’s council leader Coun Eleanor Wills said: “We welcome this support from our close neighbour Stockport and from our wider Greater Manchester family. The partnership, along with the recent appointment of a permanent director of children’s services Jill Colbert, is a really positive step in our improvement journey.”

Stockport's cabinet member for children, families and education, Coun Wendy Meikle added: "We are incredibly proud to have been selected by the DfE to partner with Tameside as they continue their improvement journey.

"Stockport has a long history of successful strategic partnerships and we look forward to what this opportunity will bring for both councils.

"Stockport had the full backing of our colleagues at the GMCA and we will work together to ensure the best outcomes for children.”
