Steven Gerrard lays down Coutinho marker ahead of Aston Villa vs Leeds and new season

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has backed Philippe Coutinho to build on his performances from last season to have a 'fantastic' first full year at Villa Park.

Coutinho, 30, arrived on an initial loan deal from Barcelona in January but has since secured a permanent stay after the club completed the signing of the Brazilian international for around £17 million. Coutinho recorded five goals and three assists across 16 starts in claret and blue last season, but will be eager to build on that record following his first pre-season with the club.

Speaking ahead of Villa's friendly with Leeds United in Brisbane tomorrow (5.35am kick off), Gerrard explained what he expects to see from Coutinho tomorrow and throughout next season, saying: “You will see Coutinho [against Leeds] and I’d expect to see what you’re used to seeing, which is a real quality high-level performer.

“Phil joined us on the back of not playing much football. He ignited the place initially and he had a period where he was getting used to the speed and intensity of the Premier League again, which was normal and we expected that.

“The luxury of a full pre-season with Phil, having that five weeks as his base, I’m sure he’s going to have a fantastic season and I can’t wait to see him play again.”
