Steve Gibson's support to Wilder and why it would take a 'ridiculous' offer to sell Fry or Tavernier

Chris Wilder says it would take a 'ridiculous' offer for Middlesbrough to sell key men Dael Fry and Marcus Tavernier this summer. And he insists even in such circumstances, he is absolutely certain that owner Steve Gibson would reinvest any money coming in to help Wilder strengthen the Boro squad as a result.

As Boro's summer business is already proving, they are not reliant on the sale of Djed Spence this summer, but as the two parties move closer to an agreement, the sale should boost Wilder's spending power this summer with Gibson throwing his full backing behind Wilder's plans to get Boro back to the Premier League in the upcoming season.

And while the sale of Spence makes sense for many reasons, Wilder is far less willing to part with Fry and Tavernier, who were key men for him last season and will be so again next term. Both have Premier League ambitions and are regularly speculated upon as they continue to grow after emerging through the ranks of the Boro academy at Rockliffe.

If there's one thing that this summer transfer window is showing it's that no club is prone to losing players. Wilder points out that Liverpool have lost Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich, by way of example of this. But he is adamant that it would take a ridiculous offer to prize either star away from Teesside this summer, with both having two years remaining on their current contracts. And even in the event such big offers did arrive, Wilder is sure that Gibson would support him and reinvest the money.
