Steve Bruce sends strong message outlining future West Brom plans

West Brom were unable to build upon their win against Bournemouth in midweek as they lost 3-1 at home to Stoke on Saturday.

The Baggies were well beaten by a Potters side who themselves struggle for consistency, on what was a hugely frustrating afternoon.

Chances of a play-off push were slim under Steve Bruce, but they could have kept themselves in the hunt with the likes of Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United all dropping points.

But this latest under-par performance has left Bruce angered, as he told the Birmingham Mail that changes are required ahead of next season: “We have to have a team that’s capable of mounting a challenge to get out of this division and they’re [the supporters] not going to be happy if they see their team in mid-table.

“We have to have the ability to change and we have to bring a fresher, younger look to everything. We’re verging on a major overhaul. That’s required because the club is never going to accept being halfway in the Championship and rightly so.”

Albion currently find themselves in 11th place on 57 points, meaning they’ve won just 17 points since mid-December.

The Verdict

It’s hard to disagree with Bruce. The season has been a disaster for the Baggies as it’s not just results that has been an issue.

Underperformance, questionable recruitment and player fallouts have hindered the club this season which has ultimately led to this point.

If West Brom are to compete next season, the squad needs freshening up and the manager needs to be backed in what is going to be a crucial summer.
