Stellies coach confident of an upturn in form - 'we can go on a good run'

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker is confident that his side can go on a winning run to get themselves out of the relegation area, highlighting Chippa and Sekhukhune United as inspiration.

The Cape Winelands side are currently on a nine game winless run stretching back to October last year, leaving them two points ahead of bottom of the table Marumo Gallants.

With the Cape derby coming up tonight (19:30), Barker believes that it's time for his squad to accept the current situation and for them to take it one game at a time as they look towards staying up. 

"I think it's important for us to accept and understand the position that we are in and not look too far ahead, Barker told reporters.

"It's accepting and understanding where we are and facing up to the challenges that lie ahead.

"It's important for us to focus on one game at a time. On Friday evening, we need to put all our energies into that match and hopefully put in a performance that gets us the three points that we desire and need and then we take it from there.

Despite the current doom and gloom surrounding his side, Barker has not given up on staying in the DStv Premiership just yet with just six points separating bottom of the table Gallants to 10th place Chippa United.

Barker highlighted that both Sekhukhune and Chippa, at different points in the season were in similar positions to where Stellies now find themselves, only needed a couple of wins to move up the table as they climbed up to 7th and 10th respectively.

"It has shown this season when you look at Chippa, who went on a run to get themselves off the bottom of the table.

"It's happened to Sekhukhune and Martizburg. Those are possible and we have a team capable (of it) when we have everyone available and
