Springboks 'proud' of precocious debutant Moodie as Nienaber addresses Bomb Squad future

At 19, Canan Moodie will still have to answer myriad questions over what looks set to be a fruitful career though it didn't take him long to emphatically shout that he belongs at international level.

The Bulls winger looked assured on his debut, illuminating the Springboks' 24-8 win over the Wallabies with a fine try when he showed his aerial prowess in plucking a pinpoint Jaden Hendrikse kick.

Predictably, national coach Jacques Nienaber was chuffed with his rookie finisher.

"We're very happy and proud of him. He's been good for the Bulls and we followed him for a long time. To be fair, we have been unfortunate with injuries to our right wings and Canan probably started as our fourth or fifth choice this season," he said.

"We've used 32 players in the last few weeks, which is quite tough on the team [in terms of continuity]. That said, there are certain answers that we wanted and still want within this year and Canan is one of them."

Moodie's almost eerie composure formed part of a broader theme of a much-changed combination - there were eight switches - showing an encouraging amount of confidence and focus despite a week where scrutiny on various aspects of the team was increased.

"Whilst trying to stay competitive and win the Rugby Championship, we also need to get clarity on some positions going into the World Cup. We've had to be creative with selection at times.

"This team never lost belief, even though the lack of continuity in selection that's been forced on us could've affected them. I’m very proud of Canan and a few other players," said Nienaber.
