Springboks-on-standby trio get BaaBaas call-up to face Samoa

Three players named among the Springboks' standby group for the Rugby World Cup will turn out for the Barbarians on Friday night.

The famed invitational side takes on Samoa in Brive, France, and will include Herschel Jantjies at scrumhalf, Jean-Luc du Preez at lock and Joseph Dweba, who will wear the No 2 jumper.

Du Preez will co-captain the side along with Australian Curtis Rona.

The game forms part of Samoa's preparation for the global showpiece, which kicks off in France on 8 September, and provides the three South Africans with an excellent opportunity to remain match sharp should they be needed as injury replacements for Jacques Nienaber's world champions.

Other South African players included in the Barbarian team are the Sharks duo of lock Reniel Hugo and flank Dylan Richardson, as well as Stormers hooker Andre-Hugo Venter, who will play off the bench.

Kick-off on Friday is at 20:45.

Flyhalf Handre Pollard was also included on the Bok standby list and, as confirmed by Nienaber last week, will likely be called up to the 33-man World Cup squad should anyone get injured.

"If there's an injury, he can come in, and that's probably the most obvious one," Nienaber told reporters when quizzed about Pollard's match readiness.

The Springboks take on Wales in their second-to-last warm-up clash in Cardiff on Saturday, where Manie Libbok wears the No 10 jumper.

Kick-off in Cardiff on Saturday is at 16:15.
