Speed skaters Sarault, Roussel victorious in 1,500m races at short track nationals

Speed skater Courtney Sarault picked up from her outstanding Olympic performance seven months ago, earning a silver medal in the women’s 1,500 metres on Thursday at the Canadian short track championships in Montreal.

The Moncton, N.B., native crossed the finish line in two minutes 34.940 seconds ahead of Danaé Blais of Châteauguay, Que. (2:34.995) and Florence Brunelle of Trois-Rivières, Que. (2:35.310).

A year ago, Sarault took the 1,500 at Maurice Richard Arena after capturing silver at the 2025 world championships.

Last February, Sarault collected four medals at Milano-Cortina Olympics and was ninth in the 1,500.

Following the Olympics, Sarault contributed to Canada's silver medal in the mixed 2,000m relay at the world short-track championships in Montreal, having competed in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Last Nov. 30, she became the first Canadian woman to capture the overall title at the short track World Tour finale in Dordrecht, Netherlands. She skated to silver in the 1,500 before winning the 500, giving Sarault nine medals (five gold, three silver and bronze) across the four Tour stops.

Also Thursday, Félix Roussel of Sherbrooke, Que., won the men’s 1,500 in 2:17.538.

The 25-year-old defeated Mathieu Pelletier of Laval, Que., (2:17.705) and Montreal’s Will Dandjinou (2:17.708).

Roussel was a member of the Olympic team that took silver in mixed team relay with Dandjinou and Sarault in Milan.

Roussel had three podium finishes at last year’s short track nationals.
