Roger Federer admits to last night nerves after emotional farewell

Roger Federer may have been one of the sporting world's great communicators over the last two decades but the Swiss confessed he had been dreading being handed a microphone after his glorious career came to a close at the Laver Cup on Friday. The 41-year-old polyglot, who has given countless on-court interviews in his 24 years at the top of the game, feared that his emotions would render him inarticulate after his final doubles match at London's O2 Arena.

Roadmap still up for discussion, says new AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey

Football Federation (AIFF), hasn’t got enough sleep of late. He’s chaired meetings, met the FIFA president, interacted with two chief ministers on successive days and been busy giving shape to his thoughts. The former India goalkeeper speaks to TOI about things that need his immediate attention. Excerpts…Will the AIFF stick with the roadmap for the reform process agreed by all stakeholders, including AFC, in 2019?You have to see the pros and cons, (besides) feasibility. When there is a regime change, some agreements are always looked at (again). Maybe in certain areas, we have to work on it. We have to take every stakeholder into consideration. Someone has invested a lot, others are losing money. We have to consider all these factors. What about this season’s I-League champion getting promoted to next season’s Indian Super League (ISL), as per the roadmap? After getting elected, I met FSDL management and we discussed this subject. But in that meeting, we felt there is still lots that needs to be discussed. Also, with the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup to be organised, we decided to meet and discuss this post the tournament. Is there no clarity how the roadmap will be implemented? If you ask me, from the last meeting, I would say we did not come to any conclusion where I can say with certainty that Indian football is going in this direction.

Would like to see Axar Patel's batting, won't analyse Jasprit Bumrah's bowling much: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is extremely pleased with Axar Patel's bowling effort but is eagerly waiting to see how he bats in crunch moments after the spin all-rounder made an impression in the team's win in the second T20I against Australia, here on Friday. The left-arm spinner grabbed two wickets -- Glenn Maxwell and Tim David -- and conceded only 13 runs in his two overs in the must-win game for the hosts. "Axar can bowl in any stage, gives me an advantage of using the other bowlers in different situations too - maybe use the pacers in the middle overs if he bowls in the powerplay. I would like to see his batting as well," said Rohit. The skipper himself produced a match-winning, unbeaten 46-run knock. His first six was a humongous 90-metre shot off pacer Josh Hazlewood. "I was quite surprised as well actually. Didn't expect to hit it like that, glad it came off. For the last 8-9 months I have been playing like that. You can't really plan too much in such a shortened game," he said about his batting.

From Chakdah to Lord's, Jhulan Goswami has had a fairytale journey

cricket as a raw, rookie pacer. It won’t take Jhulan Goswami long to become a legendary fast bowler. In the era of compact disc, Jhulan was like a long-playing record, who started her international career in 2002 under the Women’s Cricket Association of India (WCAI) against England in Chennai. At 39 years and 302 days, when the former India skipper’s journey ends with the final ODI against England at Lords on Saturday, she would have played 12 Tests, 68 T20Is and 204 ODIs, with 353 wickets in her bag. Her tally of 253 wickets in ODIs is the best in women’s cricket, with South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail a distant second with 191.

Watch: Tearful Roger Federer bows out of tennis with Laver Cup defeat

Roger Federer described his tennis career as a "perfect journey" despite being denied a fairytale ending early Saturday with a doubles defeat at the Laver Cup alongside long-time rival Rafael Nadal. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, dogged by a knee injury, has not played since the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals and last week announced his retirement at the age of 41. Federer showed glimpses of his old self in the match against Team World's Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock to the delight of a feverish, partisan crowd at London's O2 arena. Federer and Nadal won the first set but the Americans rallied to win 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 11-9.

2nd T20I, India vs Australia: Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel sparkle as India clinch truncated tie

Rohit Sharma didn’t put a foot wrong on Friday. Right from bringing in Axar Patel in the Powerplay to driving his team’s chase, the skipper aced it all. Sharma displayed a range of shots as he creamed Australian attack and carried his bat as India defeated Australia by six wickets at the VCA stadium. After losing Hardik Pandya in the penultimate over from Pat Cummins, Rohit (46 not out) played a magnificent square-cut that meant India needed just 10 runs from the last over. Once again, Dinesh Karthik displayed his finishing act with a six and a four to level the series. India scored 94 for 4 while chasing a 91-run target in a truncated match of 8-over a side.
