In an international career spanning 13 years, Lal played 39 Tests and 67 ODIs for India. His best bowling figures in Test cricket were 5/23 and in ODIs - 4/20. He also scored over 1000 runs in Test cricket, with 5 half-centuries. Fondly called 'Maddi paa', he was one of India's big heroes of the 1983 World Cup triumph, finishing as the joint second highest wicket taker of the tournament with 17 wickets. He has also been a cricket coach and a selector.
