Premier League leaders Liverpool must end their recent wobble to keep the chasing pack at bay this weekend. Everton and Tottenham meet in a battle of two desperate teams, while in-form Newcastle striker Alexander Isak can move closer to a Premier League record. Let's look at three talking points ahead of the weekend's action:
Pakistan star Fakhar Zaman has stated that he would miss coming to play in India, having enjoyed his time during the 2023 World Cup. A joint-decision was reached by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, of scheduling India-Pakistan matches in neutral venues till at least 2027. It has meant that India will play all of their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai, and Zaman also reflected on that matter.
Rattled by the senior men's team's humiliating debacle in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put in place a new policy for senior cricketers and made it mandatory for all to adhere to it. Apart from the restrictions on the wives and girlfriends accompanying the players on lengthy tours, the BCCI's new policy also bars players from engaging in personal shoots or endorsements during ongoing series or tours. Henceforth, the players will also be discouraged from leaving practice sessions early. Participation in BCCI's official shoots and functions will be mandatory for the players.
A series of jaw-dropping upsets of top 10 players at the Australian Open by fearless teenagers has fuelled excitement at the future of men's tennis as the old guard fades into history. With Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray retiring last year and Novak Djokovic in the twilight of his record-breaking career, the torch has already passed to the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. But the giant-killing exploits in Melbourne of Joao Fonseca, Learner Tien and Jakub Mensik signalled another generation are already knocking on the door.
The Panamanian Football Federation said Thursday FIFA had banned its boss Manuel Arias from performing his functions for six months for calling a player "fat." Federation president Arias was sanctioned for using "inappropriate language" about Marta Cox who plays for the Panama national team and for Turkey's Fenerbahce club. Arias had called the 27-year-old "fat" to reporters in March 2023 after the player criticized women's football in Panama, which has an amateur league where most players do not receive a salary or have access to proper stadiums or training facilities.
