Olympics 2024 Opening Ceremony Pays Big Tribute To Hindi In Paris; Internet Says 'Proud To Be Indian'

The Paris Olympics 2024 got off to a glittering start with an opening ceremony that celebrated unity in diversity. The city of Paris turned into a colossal amphitheater, and the iconic river Seine served as a track for the athletes' parade as France showcased its cultural diversity, spirit of revolution, impeccable craftsmanship, and architectural heritage in a riveting opening ceremony for the 33rd Olympic Games on Friday. The spectacle started with a dreamy break from tradition as the 'Parade of Nations' kicked off the proceedings in which athletes from 205 countries and one refugee team sailed down the Seine on boats despite heavy rain, in the run-up to and during the ceremony, threatening to play spoilsport.

First Time In 147 Years: Zimbabwe Cricketer Registers Unwanted Record

Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Clive Madande set a never-seen-before unwanted record when he conceded 42 byes in a Test innings against Ireland on Friday. The runs given away by the 24-year-old Madande, enduring a tough debut after he was out for a duck on Thursday's first day at Stormont, were more than Ireland's 40-run first-innings lead as they made 250 in reply to Zimbabwe's 210. The byes were not entirely his fault as he had to deal with his bowlers sending several deliveries down the legside and late swing after the ball had passed the bat. One consolation for Madande was the record he surpassed was set by England's Les Ames -- widely regarded as one of cricket's greatest wicketkeeper-batsmen -- who gave away 37 byes in Australia's total of 327 in a Test at The Oval back in 1934.

Jasprit Bumrah No Longer India's Test Vice-Captain? Report Names Rohit Sharma's New Deputy

Shubman Gill is all set to replace Jasprit Bumrah as the Indian cricket team vice-captain in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, according to a report by Revsportz. The youngster was reportedly as Rohit Sharma's deputy in white-ball cricket over the past few games and it looks like Gill will also be given an extremely important role in red-ball cricket. Gill is currently considered as one of the big contenders to take over the captaincy in all formats and this move can be a huge step in that direction. Coming to the series against Bangladesh, the opening Test will be played on September 19 in Chennai, while the second encounter will be played on September 27 at Green Park in Nagpur.

Rainy Paris Olympics Parade Dampens Many Spectators' Spirits

Wrapped in a poncho under torrential rain, Brazilian Lucas Amadeu said he regretted forking out 2,700 euros ($2,930) for a top seat at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on Friday. "I think for those who are watching on the television it must be an amazing show, with beautiful pictures," he told AFP from a stand close to the historic Alexandre III bridge. "But for us who are here, we don't see the show, just a lot of boats going by.

West Indies' Treble Strike Rocks England In Third Test

Jason Holder produced a fine all-round display as the West Indies took three late wickets, including both England openers with successive deliveries, in a stirring fightback on Friday's opening day of the third Test at Edgbaston. Holder's 59 helped turn the West Indies' 115-5 into a total of 282 all out as they looked to restore some pride, having already lost this three-match series at 2-0 down. And the towering all-rounder then held two fine slip catches as England slumped to 38-3 at stumps, a deficit of 244 runs.
