John Higgins was dumped out of the European Masters at the qualifying stage after suffering a shock 5-3 defeat to fellow Scotsman Scott Donaldson on Sunday. World No. 5 Higgins won the 1st frame with a break of 62, but then shipped the next four with Perth professional Donaldson contributing 51 and 52 to lead 4-1 at the Morningside Arena in Leicester.
Mikel Azcona has been crowned King of the Weekend after an extraordinary fifth round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, Race IT, at Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi with continuing searing hot temperatures giving all competitors a stern test in the glorious Regione Lazio. Azcona took his first King of the Weekend win as his Hyundai Motorsport N squad were victorious for their first weekend too as they overtook Romeo Ferraris in the standings after a weekend which promised much for the local squad but ultimately delivered a very different weekend than that expected.
Lorena Wiebes (DSM) won a drag race against Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) on the Champs-Elysees to become the first stage winner in Tour de France Femmes history on Sunday. The victory also meant that Wiebes will wear the first yellow jersey of the race on Stage 2, when she will be hoping to double up. Below, Becky Hart provided a preview for what we have coming up next...
Darren Clarke held firm in difficult conditions to join some elite company with a win in the Senior Open at Gleneagles. The Northern Irishman played the best golf all week, but gave the rest of the field a chance due to a cold putter. Ad/> That remained the case on Sunday, but following a rain delay late in the afternoon, he dug in and made a birdie on 18 to become only the fourth man after Gary Player, Bob Charles and Tom Watson to win both The Open and Senior Open.
Could Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) actually win the yellow jersey at a future edition of the Tour de France? That was the question posed on The Breakaway after the curtain call at the 2022 Tour, which saw the Belgian’s team-mate Jonas Vingegaard crowned champion after a thrilling three-week battle with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). Ad/> Van Aert has been the rider of the Tour with a string of devastating attacks and selfless teamwork helping deliver six stage wins for Jumbo, including three for himself and the green jersey.
Thirty-three years is a long time without a women’s edition of the Tour de France. It is so long, in fact, that although officially Sunday's run around Paris marked a resumption, a continuation of sorts, it was rightly treated as something entirely new. Ad/> It’s almost certainly true that none of the 144 riders who took the start of the Tour de France Femmes remember Dutch star Monique Knol’s sprint victory in 1989 across, give or take a few hundred metres, the same finish line as Lorena Wiebes.
Pool FURIOUS presented a very different DHL Super Final than expected to end the fifth round of the FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup, Race IT, in Vallelunga with what looked like being a certain win for Hyundai Motorsport N driver Nicky Catsburg turning into a victory for CUPRA EKS driver Mattias Ekström. It was already a very different and depleted grid after Romeo Ferraris withdrew their cars following Bruno Spengler’s earlier accident in the earlier Pool FAST DHL Super Final meaning Maxime Martin was unable to continue his fine run of form from pole position and Giovanni Venturini would not have the chance to put in a fine performance to end his weekend either.
