France players to honor victims of Paris attacks in 2015

PARIS: The French soccer federation will pay tribute to the victims of the November 2015 attacks that targeted the Bataclan theater, Paris cafés and the national stadium in assaults that killed more than 130 people and injured over 400. France’s national team hosts Ukraine on Nov. 13 in a men’s World Cup qualifier, 10 years after the worst attack on French soil since World War II. To commemorate the anniversary, the French federation said Friday it will take part in national ceremonies honoring the victims. The match will not be played at the Stade de France, one of the sites attacked that night, but at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Yamal set for Spain return in World Cup qualifiers

MADRID: Lamine Yamal returned to the Spain squad named Friday after injury forced Barcelona’s young star to miss last month’s World Cup qualifiers. A groin problem kept Yamal sidelined for Spain’s games against Georgia and Bulgaria. But after recovering from a groin injury and returning to club duty, Yamal is back in the reckoning to face Georgia on November 15 in Tbilisi followed by Turkiye in Seville three days later. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz is also fit again after recovering from a leg injury suffered in the 2-1 Champions League defeat of Barcelona at the start of October. Spain, the European champions, are top of Group E, with automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup in their grasp. While Yamal returns to national duty, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente will be missing his Barca teammate Pedri. Also out of contention with injury are Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal, Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, and Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand.

Real Madrid and Barcelona seek LaLiga solace after European setbacks

MADRID: LaLiga pacesetters Real Madrid and Barcelona will aim to bounce back from midweek Champions League setbacks as they return to LaLiga action this weekend, looking to rebuild confidence ahead of a two-week international break. Leaders Real, who have 30 points after 11 matches, hold a five-point lead over second-placed Barcelona. However, inconsistency against stronger opponents has led to criticism of manager Xabi Alonso’s rotation policy, and the team will look to steady the ship when they visit local rivals Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de Vallecas on Sunday. Real suffered a humbling 1-0 defeat at Liverpool on Tuesday, with Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois delivering a stellar performance to prevent a heavier loss. Despite his heroics, the defeat highlighted concerns about Real’s ability to compete at the highest level in Europe. The result dampened the optimism generated by their hard-fought 2-1 El Clasico victory over visiting Barca two weeks ago. Alonso, who took over from Carlo Ancelotti in May, has guided Real to 18 wins in 21 matches across all competitions. However, defeats by Paris St.

UK police say Maccabi Tel Aviv fans banned from Aston Villa match over hooliganism, not threats

LONDON: West Midlands Police have said their decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from attending the club’s Europa League fixture against Aston Villa on Thursday was based on intelligence suggesting “significant levels of hooliganism” among a section of the Israeli club’s fan base, rather than concerns about threats to Israeli fans.
