Source: Packers adding TE Jonnu Smith on one-year deal - ESPN

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers are adding some much-needed depth at tight end by signing veteran Jonnu Smith, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith, 31, played last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played in all 17 games but had just 38 catches for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He was most productive with the Miami Dolphins the previous season, when he put up a career-high 884 receiving yards and scored eight touchdowns in his lone Pro Bowl season.

The Packers will be his sixth NFL team.

Green Bay was in search of depth behind starter Tucker Kraft, who is coming off ACL surgery but will be available for the Sept. 13 season opener at the Minnesota Vikings.

The tight end depth took a hit when Luke Musgrave sustained a neck injury during the June minicamp and missed all of training camp. He remains on the physically unable to perform list.

The only other experienced tight end on the roster is Josh Whyle, who played in eight games last season but caught only five passes.

Behind Whyle, the Packers' next most experienced tight end was Drake Dabney, who has played in two career NFL games.

The Steelers released Smith ahead of the new league year, a move that saved them about $7 million in cap space.

Pittsburgh had acquired Smith from the Dolphins as part of the trade that also swapped Minkah Fitzpatrick and Jalen Ramsey last summer. He had 222 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his lone season with the Steelers.

Before Pittsburgh, Smith spent a season each with the Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons. He also played for the New England Patriots for two years and for the Tennessee Titans for four seasons after being selected by them in the third round of the 2017 draft.
