Slammed at the weekend: Nuno signing is allegedly now only worth £8.5m at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty has suffered another embarrassment as his most recent transfer valuation suggests just how badly his time at the club has gone – all amid a poor performance at the weekend. 

According to the CIES Football Observatory – which uses scientific research to determine the transfer worth of footballers – Doherty is now worth €7-€10m, which is under £8.5m.

In the summer of 2020, the right-back left Wolves in favour of a move to north London for a fee in the region of £15m. Since then, however, it’s safe to say things have not exactly gone to plan for the Republic of Ireland international.

Indeed, while he was a regular at his former club, he has failed to nail down a starting spot at Spurs with any kind of consistency. In his first season, he started just 13 league games, while he has just two starts this term.

At Wolves, he was an exciting attacking defender, scoring four Premier League goals in each of his last two seasons with the club. At Tottenham, he is yet to hit the back of the net in any competition.

Due to his drop-off in form, the player’s financial value arguably now reflects this.

Perhaps his time at Spurs was summed up by his latest league display – which ironically came against his former club. The 30-year-old was given a 3/10 player rating by football.london for his role in the 2-0 loss.

Alasdair Gold wrote: “Offered very little down the right either as a wing-back or a right-back after Sessegnon’s departure.”

Such thoughts were echoed by the Evening Standard, which commented on Doherty’s dismal display, saying: “Did little against his former club to suggest he is an upgrade on Emerson Royal and continues to look the shadow of the player who caught the eye at Molineux.”

It’
