Skate: New game set to be free-to-play

EA has confirmed that Skate 4 is officially called Skate and will be free-to-play when it finally releases.

The game is currently set for release on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, although there has been no confirmation over whether the game will be next-gen exclusive.

Skate is not technically a sequel to the other three Skate games that came out in the Xbox 360 era but is instead a reboot and is being touted as a platform that will be continually updated, as per Video Games Chronicle.

Skate will take place in San Vansterdam, the same universe as San Vanelona from the previous Skate games.

However, EA are said to have made it clear that while this will be free-to-play, there are not going to be pay-to-win mechanics involved in the game. That means no paywalls and no loot boxes.

Microtransactions are said to be cosmetic in nature instead of being geared towards helping players get ahead of the competition.

A playtest is currently ongoing, with EA allowing players to dive into the world and see how Skate is progressing as a game.

EA has previously told players not to download a cracked version of the pre-Alpha test, after it was circulated online.

The Skate franchise has been dormant for some time and, as a result, there is real excitement among fans as they await the latest instalment.

It remains to be seen exactly how the free-to-play element will work but we’ll bring you any updates as and when we get them. EA, of course, have history when it comes to loot boxes, having aggressively monetised FIFA and Madden.

There isn’t a release date yet, but the constant drip-feed of information is only likely to be a good thing.
