Sir Alex Ferguson drops hint to Erik ten Hag about achieving Manchester United success

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted his first Premier League title triumph with Manchester United 'opened the door' for the rest.

A few years after Ferguson made the move to manage at Old Trafford, United's title challenge in the 1991/92 season collapsed and the club's wait for a first-division title, which had last been won in 1967, continued to much frustration.

However, the 26-year run without an English league title was ended in the following campaign when United, who were captained by Bryan Robson, comfortably won the inaugural Premier League title in 1992/1993 ahead of Aston Villa.

Ferguson, who has become the first manager alongside Arsene Wenger to be inducted into the Premier League's Hall of Fame, thinks that success was a springboard for success in the future, which is a message Erik ten Hag will heed.

Ten Hag ended the club's trophy drought by lifting the Carabao Cup last month and it's hoped that will also open the door for other titles, particularly the Premier League, which United have not won since Ferguson's last season.

"When we won our first Premier League title, that just opened the door for us," Ferguson told the Premier League. "Challenging for the league is the most important thing. That’s what keeps everyone happy in the club. We tried to win every league.

"We were close to winning every league in that period of 18 years or something. Five times, we were second and we won it the next year. Leadership is basically the manager’s ability to put his personality in the team.
