Singapore reaches women’s table tennis team final at Commonwealth Games after beating Australia

SINGAPORE: The Singapore women’s table tennis team will play against Malaysia for the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after a 3-0 victory over Australia in the semi-finals on Sunday (Jul 31).

At The NEC in Birmingham, England, Zhou Jingyi and Zeng Jian got Singapore off to a solid start with a 3-1 win against Jee Minhyung and Lay Jian Fang in the doubles, beating them 11-3, 13-11, 10-12 and 11-4.

World No 16 Feng Tianwei then beat Liu Yangzi 3-1 to extend Singapore's lead. She claimed the first game 14-12 before Liu fought back in the second to level the score. However, Feng clinched the third and fourth games - both by 11-5 - to seal victory.

Zeng then saw off the opponents by beating her Australian rival Lay 3-0, with scores of 11-5, 12-10 and 11-8.

The result pits Singapore, who finished runners-up at the last Commonwealth Games, against Malaysia in today's final. The Malaysians beat Wales 3-2 in the semi-finals.

Also on Sunday, the Singapore men’s team beat Canada 3-0 in the quarter-finals to move into the last four, where they will face off with England today.
