Simpler Danish kit to serve as protest against Qatar

The kit that Denmark will wear at the upcoming World Cup is to mirror that worn by the victorious Euro 92 squad, but is also intended to serve as a protest against Qatar and its human rights record from the Danish FA and kit manufacturer Hummel Sport.

The new kits were launched on Monday and are lifted directly from the Euro 1992-winning squad's kits - a tournament where the Danes came in as a late replacement for Yugoslavia and famously went on to triumph, defeating Germany 2-0 in the final in Gothenburg.

However, in a strongly-worded statement posted on Instagram, Hummel also outlined the reason why branding on the new kit have been toned down.

The post read: "With the Danish national team’s new jerseys, we wanted to send a dual message. They are not only inspired by Euro 92, paying tribute to Denmark’s greatest football success, but also a protest against Qatar and its human rights record.

"That’s why we’ve toned down all the details for Denmark’s new World Cup jerseys, including our logo and iconic chevrons. We don’t wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives. We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn’t the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation.

"We believe that sport should bring people together. And when it doesn’t, we want to make a statement."

Denmark will open their World Cup campaign against Tunisia on 22 November.
