'Silly' - Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel blasts new signing for mistake vs Crystal Palace

Peter Schmeichel blasted Sofyan Amrabat for giving away the “silly” free-kick which led to Crystal Palace’s winner.

Another crushing defeat piled more misery on Manchester United, who have now lost four of their opening seven Premier League games. Optimistic supporters thought they had turned a corner after back-to-back wins but Palace exerted revenge for their Carabao Cup exit in midweek with a 1-0 win.

Amrabat again played in defence as Erik ten Hag tried to cope with his left-back crisis. Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Sergio Reguilon are all sidelined, forcing the Moroccan to play out of position. That was evident for the winner as he clumsily fouled Jordan Ayew for the free-kick which led to the goal.

Joachim Anderson smashed the resulting set-piece home to earn the Eagles an unlikely win at Old Trafford. Speaking to Premier League Productions, United legend Schmeichel singled out Amrabat for criticism.

“We talked about Amrabat before the game. It is his first full Premier League game and he has just not had a great game. He gives a silly foul away which leads to this free kick. I expected a Danish player (Rasmus Hojlund) to score at the other end today.”

However, the former goalkeeper refused to either take credit away from Palace or stick the knife in Andre Onana. Last month, Schmeichel slated United’s new shot-stopper following the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal.

“For Joachim Anderson to hit the ball like that, what a fantastic goal,” Schmiechel added. “We can talk about whether the goalkeeper should have done better, should the defence have done better. Just enjoy this. It is a fantastic finish.”
