Sidcup 26 Gravesend 17: Regional 2 South East match report

By Mark Bruce

Gravesend lost their Regional 2 South East relegation battle clash at Sidcup 26-17.

The side’s usual troubles of basic errors, lack of discipline and poor execution ultimately saw them come away pointless as the home team capitalised on chances that were put their way.

An uncharacteristically slow start allowed Sidcup to get the upper hand in the early exchanges although just as Gravesend were beginning to wrestle control a knock-on when under no pressure allowed the Sidcup scrum-half to scamper home under the posts.

Penalties were exchanged before Gravesend were rewarded for their endeavours with Brendan Kelly, who carried well all game, going over from close range.

Sidcup continued to take any points on offer and with Gravesend’s discipline poor at times they trailed 16-10 just after half-time. They responded well though and this time Tom Bird managed to find the line with the ever-reliable Josh Smith converting.

That was the last score for them, though, as Sidcup found enough to cross again with what was probably the move of the game, carving a big hole in the centre of the park before going over under the posts.

A further penalty saw Sidcup close the game out leaving Gravesend’s next match on January 27, at home to the only side below them in the table, London Cornish, as a must-win game.
