Shubman Gill slams maiden ton for Glamorgan against Sussex

Both the 23-year-old’s two sixes – a ramp shot over slips off Pakistan pacer Faheem Ashraf, and a superb pickup shot off pacer Bradley Currie over mid-wicket -were classy shots. It was Gill’s 8th century in his 38th First-Class game. Glamorgan shared a video on twitter of Gill reaching his century, captioning it: “Century!!! Shubman Gill makes a maiden Glamorgan century. 123 balls, 12 fours, 2 sixes. Well batted, Shubman.”

While Gill, who is set to be picked for India’s upcoming home three-match ODI series against South Africa, top-scored with 119, wicketkeeper Chris Cooke was batting on 80, skipper David Lloyd hit a 64-ball 56, as Glamorgan reached 221 for 3 on Day 1 and were 410 for 7 on Day 2 at the time of writing this. Earlier this month, Gill scored 92 off 148 balls on his English county debut against Worcestershire at Cardiff, before getting 22 & 11 against Middlesex at Lord’s. In a terrific First-Cass career so far, Gill has scored 3121 runs in 38 games, averaging more than 50, with 8 centuries and 15 fifties in this tally. The Punjab youngster is only the third Indian to play for Glamorgan, besides former India head coach Ravi Shastri (1987-91) and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly (2005). He’s amongst the 8 Indian cricketers taking part in the English domestic season this time. Gill has been in tremendous form this year, having averaged over 100 and won Player of the Series awards against both West Indies and Zimbabwe (245 runs in 3 innings at Harare, including an unbeaten 130, his maiden ODI century) in successive series. He stroked 483 runs in 16 games for Gujarat Titans in IPL-2022.
