Shower 1, Dean Elgar 0: Proteas skipper suffers nasty gash after slipping in bathroom

Dean Elgar has garnered a reputation for being one of the toughest nuts to crack in the Proteas squad.

Unfortunately, even the feisty captain of the Test side proved susceptible to the hoary old accident of slipping in the shower.

The 34-year-old opener appeared at Thursday's pre-match virtual media briefing for Friday's second Test against Bangladesh in Gqeberha sporting a nasty gash just above his right eyebrow.

"I'm surprised this question is only coming up now," Elgar quipped mid-way through the conference after eventually being asked about his wound.

"I had a bit of an accident on the last night in Durban in my hotel room. I somehow slipped and hit my forehead trying to get out of the shower. It's obviously not ideal."

The cut was deep enough that Elgar required stitches.

However, he insisted that he'll be ready to build on a fine start to the series following his twin fifties in the 220-run victory at Kingsmead earlier this week.

"It's not my proudest moment, but I suppose these accidents happen. It's never intentional," said Elgar philosophically.

"I seem to be okay. I batted today in the nets and that initially was a concern, especially with where my helmet rests. I'm sure the stitches will come out soon.

"I'm okay. I'll survive."

Some will say that was never in doubt.

The first ball at St George's Park will be bowled at 10:00.
