Shocking and out of order - Joshua Zirkzee response given after brutal Man United reaction
Manchester United have suffered many a sobering night in recent years but the first half against Newcastle is perhaps as bad as it has ever been.
The Magpies went two goals ahead thanks to headers from Alexander Isak and Joelinton inside a comfortable 20 minutes. While the defence struggled with the aerial presence of the Newcastle front line, United had no control of the midfield nor did they have any outlet at the top of the pitch.
As such, Ruben Amorim made the unconventional decision to make a tactical change in the first half as Joshua Zirkzee was replaced by Kobbie Mainoo. With the forward heading to the touchline, loud ironic cheers were heard from the home supporters accompanied with some boos as Zirkzee waited for the ground to swallow him up.
The summer signing immediately headed to the dressing room after grabbing his jacket but re-emerged moments later. After such a savage reaction from the home fans, MEN Sport has asked our writers for their thoughts on the incident while adding what one pundit thought.
"He's subbing Zirkzee. I actually feel sorry for him, I really do," Neville explained on Monday Night Football commentary.
"I know he is earning a lot of money but there is a human being in there that is basically being cheered off by his own fans and that is brutal. I have not seen that too many times at Old Trafford in the 43 years I have been coming here if at all happen actually.
"He has had enough and I actually don't blame him. I hope that some of the fans down there actually give him a little something.
"He's not played well, let's be clear, but they have all been absolutely awful. You are watching the worst pound for pound football team in the country out there in red shirts."
