Shels' Champions League dreams ended by Glasgow City

Shelbourne's hopes of progressing in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Women’s Champions League ended in a 2-0 defeat to Glasgow City at the Siauliai Central Stadium in Lithuania on Wednesday morning.

Noel King and his players put it up to the Scottish giants for long periods, but the concession of two second-half goals proved decisive.

The Reds went into the game looking to repeat last season's run to the final of the qualifying tournament, which they lost 1-0 to Icelandic outfit Valur.

Shelbourne had no fear of a Glasgow team that made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League just three years ago.

Even with the Scottish side dominating possession from the whistle, King’s players were still able to get forward and cause problems.

The Reds saw a free-kick flash narrowly wide in the 18th minute in a promising opening.

They were disciplined as they closed down and stopped Glasgow from playing ball, with goalkeeper Amanda McQuilligan barely tested in the opening half.

She did have to deal with a cross into the area in the 23rd minute, plucking the ball out of the air with ease.

Keva Keenan made an important challenge when Glasgow tried to counter midway through the first half, with the full-back standing her ground to prevent the opposition from getting forward in numbers.

Christie Gray then set up Smyth-Lynch for a shot from outside the area, which stopper Lee Alexander pushed onto the crossbar.

Some neat passing play from Glasgow earned space for Brenna Lovera to have a go in the 33rd minute - McQuillan dived low to push the ball out for a corner that came to nothing.

After a goalless first half, Shels came out with renwed energy.

A long ball over the top dropped to Gray and her shot was blocked by the Glasgow goalkeeper
