Shelbourne profit from freak Sligo own goal

Shelbourne came from behind against Sligo Rovers to win their third game of the season thanks to a freak own goal.

The Bit O'Red completely dominated the first half, with Danny Lafferty opening his account for the club in his first start.

But the old adage of 'a game of two halves' was never truer, with the Dubliners coming from behind in the second half to take all three points.

Matty Smith netted the equaliser, before an embarrassing own goal from John Mahon gifted the hosts all three points a drama-filled game.

The north Dubliners won just one of their five previous games before tonight's encounter at Tolka Park with Damien Duff's side scoring four goals in their opening eight games.

But while Shels' are goal-shy so far this season, they have kept four clean sheets, something which the Bit O'Red have failed to do so far, conceding in all eight of their games before travelling to Drumcondra.

John Russell's side picked up an important win against Dundalk at Oriel Park on Good Friday, with Shels drawing 0-0 with the league's bottom side UCD on the same night.

The hosts started brightly, with Sligo's Luke McNicholas called into action with just six minutes played after Jack Moylan linked up with Matty Smith inside the Rovers area.
