Sheffield Wednesday: £1.35m star 'exactly what Owls have been missing'

Sadio Berahino is exactly what Sheffield Wednesday have needed, according to former Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The £1.75m-rated striker struggled in front of goal during the early parts of his Hillsborough career, but he’s been enjoying a purple patch of late.

Berahino has previously scored goals in English football for both West Brom and Stoke, although this is the first time that he’s ever played below the Championship.

Still, given the fact he once scored 14 goals in a Premier League season, finding the net regularly in League One didn’t appear one of the more difficult tasks in his career.

However, it wasn’t plain-sailing to begin with. Berahino did bag on his full debut against Shrewsbury back in September but he would fail to score in any of his next 14 appearances.

As a result, the 28-year-old was in and out of the side, with the likes of Lee Gregory and Callum Paterson often preferred by Darren Moore.

But Berahino’s campaign took a turn for the better against Doncaster last month. With the Owls trailing 1-0, he was introduced and assisted Paterson before ending his goal drought to set Wednesday on their way to three points.

He would then work his way back into the side and has now scored five goals in his last five matches, including a hat-trick in his last outing against Cambridge.

When asked about his form, Palmer told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s good because he’s what Wednesday have been missing.

“I did the game against Rotherham, they were the better side, they had the better chances in the game, but were unable to finish those chances, and in tight games, like against Rotherham, you need the likes of Gregory or Berahino to be taking those chances.”
