Sheffield United takeover latest amid reported interest from former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley

Sheffield United could kick-off next season with new owners. A report surfaced yesterday about rumours of interest from the US and that former Newcastle chief Mike Ashley was taking a watching brief.

Yorkshire Live understands the club has been in talks with an American businessman and a deal was believed to be close to being completed. Ashley is not thought to have been in the picture, but could now come to the table if the deal does not get over the line.

He recently sold the Magpies for £305m and has been keen to return to football ownership. He made a play for struggling Derby County but looks to have lost out with a deal now in place for Chris Kirchner to take over the Rams.

Indeed, should a deal not be concluded before the season ends, the club's value could increase if United were to gain promotion in that time. There are three games left of the current season, and United are eyeing a place in the play-offs and an instant return to the Premier League.

As with most takeovers, there are many moveable parts and the landscape can change very quickly. Paul Heckingbottom will be hoping the takeover can be finalised sooner rather than later.
