Sheff Utd win derby to go joint top of Championship
Rhian Brewster’s second-half goal secured Sheffield United a 1-0 win over local rivals Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday and lifted them level with Championship leaders Leeds.
Brewster’s strike just after the hour-mark at Hillsborough clinched the Blades their first season double over Wednesday in 19 years.
Chris Wilder’s side leapfrog Burnley into second and behind Leeds only on goal difference in a tight three-way battle for the two automatic promotion places to the Premier League.
The Owls missed the chance to close in on a play-off place as their winless derby run extended to six matches dating back to 2012.
Wednesday set the early tempo and went close to taking a ninth-minute lead when Michael Smith’s header was brilliantly saved by Michael Cooper.
The visitors had not seriously threatened until they went in front on 64 minutes.
Tyrese Campbell’s shot was parried by James Beadle into the path of Brewster, who fired into an empty net.
United needed one more brilliant save from Cooper to turn away Marvin Johnson’s drive and Svante Ingelsson sent the rebound over as the visitors held on.
Wednesday remains down in 12th, six points off the play-offs.
