Shakur Stevenson did victory lap before Oscar Valdez fight was even over

Shakur Stevenson outclassed Oscar Valdez on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to become the junior lightweight unified champion of the world through a unanimous decision (117–110, 118–109, 118–109).

Stevenson, a boxing silver medallist in the 2016 Summer Olympics came into the bout with a record of 17–0, while his opponent Valdez entered with an undefeated 30-win streak. 

Stevenson boxed beyond his years, peppering Valdez from start to finish with the jab. Valdez landed a few body punches but all in all, Stevenson defended well, not having to answer many questions.

The southpaw’s speed and accuracy were too much for Valdez on the night, as the Mexican found himself on the canvas in the early exchanges of the sixth round.

It was all one-way traffic from there as Stevenson went on to put on a boxing clinic, not giving his opponent a chance, despite conceding the final round. 

Valdez never recovered his composure after the sixth round and Stevenson went on to control the bout.

Sensing he was inevitably about to become the junior lightweight unified champion of the world, Stevenson ended the closing moments of the match by showboating, much to the dismay of a pro-Valdez crowd.

The 24-year-old who looks set to have a monumental career in boxing, did eventually drop to the canvas.

After being asked what was next in his plans, he dropped to one knee and proposed to rapper girlfriend Young Lyric.
