'Set his stall out' - What Erik ten Hag has told Manchester United squad about cup competitions

Harry Maguire says Erik ten Hag has made it clear that he wants to win silverware at Manchester United.

The Reds are gearing up for their first final under the Dutchman with the club the only side in Europe’s top five leagues to still be in four competitions this season. United are looking to end their near six-year trophy drought in Sunday’s Carabao Cup showdown with Newcastle.

In Friday’s press conference, Ten Hag - who made the Dutch cup final with Ajax last season - said he would only count their cup run as a success if they lift the prize at Wembley, and Maguire detailed how his boss has made that very clear across all competitions during his tenure.

“I think we’ve taken each competition really seriously,” the club captain told club media. “The manager has set his stall out in terms of what he wants - he wants to win trophies, he wants to win every football game he plays in.

“I think that shows in where we are in all competitions, we’re still in every competition and we’re still fighting for it.” Maguire is yet to touch silverware as United skipper and says a club trophy is overdue.

He added: “Winning trophies is what this club is about, it demands winning trophies, it’s been far too long since the last one. We’ve got a good opportunity to win a trophy.

“We need to win it for ourselves and the club and also our fans because they’ve waited far too long as well. We’ve put ourselves in a good position but there’s no point going to a final if you’re going to lose it.”

In a message to United fans, Maguire said: “Enjoy the day, enjoy the occasions. Hopefully us players can produce and put a big smile on your face come the 90th minute.”
