Serena takes out Kontaveit to advance at US Open
Serena Williams' farewell tour isn't over just yet.
In what is expected to be her final US Open -- and final professional tournament -- Williams defeated No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to the third round.
The 23-time major winner took the opening set in a tiebreaker but Kontaveit adjusted nicely to even things up. In the third and final set, Serena went up 2-0 and was up 40-0 in the following game but could not hold on as Kontaveit was able to get back on serve. But Williams broke right back the following game and went on to win four of the next five games to take the match.
Williams opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Montenegrin Danka Kovinić at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.
More to come.
