'Send a signal!' Owen Hargreaves names the player next Man Utd manager should sign first

Owen Hargreaves insists it isn’t all doom and gloom at Manchester United and claims most players and managers would still want to sign for the club, despite last night’s tepid Champions League exit.

United’s trophy drought will stretch into a sixth year after they were beaten 1-0 at Old Trafford last night and 2-1 on aggregate by an obdurate Atletico Madrid side, with Renan Lodi’s header 41st minute header ultimately proving decisive.

Ralf Rangnick chose to blame a naïve refereeing performance as the main factor in his side’s downfall, but in truth a United side which contained the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes rarely threatened in the second period.

United must now pick themselves up and focus on the fight for fourth in the Premier League as well as plan for their immediate future by securing Rangnick’s successor.

The likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and even Thomas Tuchel are now under consideration but Hargreaves believes whoever is eventually hired as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent successor should make Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham their first signing.

England international Bellingham came close to joining United from Birmingham City nearly two years ago but chose to join the Bundesliga club, despite a charm offensive led by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Bellingham is likely to be in high demand again during the close season and Hargreaves has urged his old club to ‘send a signal’ of intent by landing one of Europe’s most exciting young midfield talents.

He told BT Sport: ‘They don’t have a coach for next year, we don’t know who the sporting director is, there’s a lot of players out of contract like Pogba, Cavani there’s the Martial situation there’s five or six or seven player
