Selwyn Cobbo closing in on new Brisbane Broncos deal

Selwyn Cobbo is set to turn his back on big-money deals from rival clubs and commit his immediate future to the Brisbane Broncos.

The 19-year-old is one of the hottest prospects in the NRL and clubs are queueing up for him. Every club excluding Penrith and Melbourne have declared their interest in the Broncos speedster.

However he is set to reject them all and pen a new deal with the Broncos. That is according to his agent Tas Bartlett who says a deal is close to being agreed.

Cobbo is under contract until the end of 2023 but will be free to accept offers for 2024 from 1st November this year. There has been talk of clubs offering him $900,000 a year.

Brisbane cannot match that due to the salary cap. But it seems as though money is not the main motivator for Cobbo. He loves the Broncos and wants to carry on playing for them.

The deal is said to be worth $700,000 and will run until the end of 2024. If the Broncos continue to improve there is the possibility of a more long-term deal down the line.

Cobbo’s management are keen for their client to have the best chance of winning premierships while in his prime.

“We’re well advanced in negotiations with the Broncos, we are getting to the pointy end,” Bartlett told Newscorp. “Selwyn wants to stay a Bronco. “He grew up following the Broncos, he is living his dream playing for the Broncos and they have done a lot of welfare work to help get Selwyn to this point.

“The Broncos are in pole position, Selwyn is enjoying playing under Kevvie. He wants to show a sense of loyalty to the club.”
