Sebastian Vettel reveals worries for future generations over 'freedoms'

Sebastian Vettel says that the climate crisis could start restricting the freedoms of future generations, and that will have an impact on those trying to get into motorsport.

The German announced his retirement from Formula 1 on Thursday afternoon, with him set to leave the sport at the end of the season and move onto new challenges.

For many, the expectancy is that Seb will look to use his platform and status to push for the causes he cares about, like social justice and environmental awareness, even more than he already has, and he has certainly hinted at that being the case in media bites he’s given since the announcement that he is bowing out.

Speaking at a packed Aston Martin motorhome yesterday evening, the four-time world champion told the press gathered here at the Hungaroring that he has concerns that the climate emergency is going to start limiting the freedoms future generations have to travel and get into motorsport, and experience the things that he and older generations have when in Formula 1.

“What hurts me is that people like George, Lando, Charles, Max – they don’t have the same freedoms as maybe Lewis and I had,” said Seb.

“And whoever is coming after them will have even less freedoms because it will be more and more central and dictating more and more the way we are living and have to adapt our lives.

“That I don’t think is fair and I’m prepared and ready to fight for this sort of justice and fairness to have the same, for the kids that are go-karting today, to be able to have the same racing career that I had.”

Vettel has made no secret of how he feels about the environment and other causes, and it’s going to be interesting to see how he ups his activism once he leaves Formula 1 and its time-consuming
