Séamus Callanan calls it a day after stellar Tipperary career

Tipperary great Séamus Callanan has called time on a 16-year career as a senior inter-county hurler.

Callanan, who will be 35 next week, enjoyed a stellar career leading the line for the Premier, winning three All-Irelands - 2010, 2016, 2019 - and a National League title in 2008. He was named Hurler of the Year in 2019, as Tipp, with him as captain, won a second Liam MacCarthy Cup under Liam Sheedy.

Injuries, however, did limit his involement in recent seasons, with a hand injury ruling him out Tipp's 2022 Munster campaign, where they lost all four matches.

Four All-Star awards also came the way of the Drom & Inch clubman, who made his final appearance in the Tipp colours during this summer's All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Galway.

Callanan was replaced at half-time in that game, a week on from scoring his 40th goal in championship as Offaly were routed in the preliminary quarter-final.

In a statement on the Tipperary GAA website, Callanan said " I am very grateful to have had such an enjoyable career with so many great memories".

Reflecting on the year that was 2019, Callanan added: "The highlight of my playing career was undoubtedly captaining Tipperary to All-Ireland success in 2019. Coming back to Tipperary and Drom and Inch with the Liam McCarthy Cup is something I will treasure forever. I will always be very grateful to Liam Sheedy for entrusting me with the role of captain."

There were also a special thank you for a former Tipp manager and coach.

"I have been fortunate to meet many great people during my time hurling with Tipperary and through the GAA, but Eamon O'Shea was special amongst them all. As a mentor and friend, his guidance had a significant impact on my career, and I want to thank him most sincerely."
