Scunthorpe 3-2 Sheffield United report as Blades turn in Jekyll and Hyde pre-season showing

Paul Heckingbottom's side turned in a display that would have seen Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde scratching their heads. There's not a lot you can usually take away from pre-season fixtures, but the Blades' first-half display against Vanarama National League side Scunthorpe United was worrying.

An experienced back three of Chris Basham, John Egan and Jack Robinson were left exposed in the first-half in a poor showing. Goals from Alfie Beestin and a brace from Colin Daniel gave the hosts a fully deserved lead at the break in a disappointing opening 45 minutes for the Blades.

It was an improved second-half showing from United thanks to late goals from the Blades substitute Rhian Brewster who reduced the deficit with 15 minutes of the second-half remaining, before fellow sub Iliman Ndiaye added a second minutes later. Heckingbottom's side were unable to find a late equaliser as they continue to ramp up their pre-season preparations.

The Blades started the game with a decent intensity and had the best chance in the opening stages with a cross from the left falling to Max Lowe who volleyed an effort over the crossbar at the back post. Heckingbottom's side pressed high out of possession and made it difficult for the hosts' to play out from the back.

However, it became far too easy for the Iron to keep the ball on the edge of their own 18-yard box and the one time Marcus Dewhurst went long at Glanford Park, it caused the visitors problems. His long punt forward was flicked on by by Joe Nuttall and Daniel tried to take advantage but the Blades were able to clear their lines.
